Spiritual Healing for the Addictive Mind

Soulutions for Addiction

What is the true nature of addiction? All addiction is an attempt by our ego to gain a sense of passion and connection from life. The journey of the addict and the spiritual are very similar, they are both seeking the same thing,  passion and connection or more simply put ‘oneness’. The purpose of passion is to become ‘one with’ to blend or merge together, to feel a union and oneness.

The passionate artist or musician, loses him/herself in their craft of creation.
The artist moves beyond space and time into the creative dimension and blend or merge with the creative-spiritual force of their Soul and Spirit. They become one with the canvas or musical instrument.  It is easy to see this in the act of sex, the sexual drive  is the attempt to merge and ‘become one’. It is believed that during an orgasm you are actually momentarily connected to the beauty and power of your Soul and Divine Consciousness. Albeit fleeting this connection is so desirous that the sex drive is the  most primal part of our nature as human beings. Passion assuages lonliness and separation, while providing a sense of connection, onenness and belonging.

The Soul’s passion is to become one with God-Goddess, to experience “Oneness”. The passion of your Soul, the yearning to become one and to feel connected is the spiritual journey coming home to the Divine, returning to God-Goddess. When our ego is in charge of fulfilling this desire, it finds an activity or experience (i.e., food, alcohol, drugs, sex, etc) to try to belong, connect and momentarily experience oneness.

When we let our ego choose to ‘feel connected and passionate’ it only looks outside of itself (into the physical world) for an activity to produce that feeling. Most immature egos feel anxious and inhibited about living life. All addictive substances (alcohol, food, drugs, sex) offer people a way to feel less inhibited, filling a void temporarily and being more connected to life.  The problem occurs when we let your ego make our choices and decisions, we become addicted to something in the attempt to fill the void.

Food, alcohol, drugs, sex can offer a temporary feeling passion.  The problem is it has a ’short shelf life’ before the feeling of connection and oneness expires and then you need ‘more’ of whatever your particular ‘addiction is.

When you can develop and connect with your Soul, you can fill the void with a spiritual sense of passion and belonging, with a greater awareness of the oneness of the Divine. This is always the path of spiritual empowerment and is necessary to truly fill the void and heal the addictive mind.

Everyone has addictive mind. We must seek to understand our addictive nature rather than judge ourselves as ‘bad and wrong’. It is through understanding that the healing begins.  Beneath all addiction is this motivation for ‘connection-passion-oneness’ , but left in the hands of your ego, it will go for the ‘quick fix’ rather than the real genuine energy. Developing your spiritual nature and understanding your Soul and its passion can begin to create passion  in a genuine way without using your egos ’shortcut’.

We’ve been so trained to judge and punish ourselves for having an addictive nature, just understanding that what you are truly seeking is a beautiful loving passionate connection with the Divine. This is why all 12-step programs insist on the spiritual aspect of recovery. It is essential to heal and be free from the prison of addiction.

Many people I know who are very spiritually motivated individuals have confessed of their battle of the ego to conquer and heal their addictive mind. I believe the more you desire to grow spiritually, the easier it is to be tempted by your ego’s ’short cut’.

Why do people beome addicted. Because they feel the urge and yearning of their Soul to become one with the Divine and don’t know how to create that if they haven’t learned to be conscious of their Soul and Spirit. The ego then takes over and creates the quick fix of addiction to at least attempt to gain a sense of oneness and connection.

Most people spend the first half of their lives looking outside of themselves to find their passion and during mid-life they have more of an opportunity to begin to look within, and to explore and develop their spiritual nature.

One way to distinquish if you are functioning from an ego’s addiction versus your Soul’s passion is if you are more focused on ‘getting’ a sense of connection and passion, rather than creating a sense of connection and passion. The ego feels empty and is trying to fill that void by taking, getting from the world, where our Soul is abundant with passion, creativity and a sense of oneness. It is through our Soul that we know we are connected and can become more conscious of the divine within us and everyone that allows for the fulfillment of your passion, desires and creativity.
